Sebatosh (sebastiaan luiten) swos enthousiast who works at ‘underground popscene’ location wunderbar/worm organised the first worm cup

We investigated the possibility of having sensidays there, but his bosses wanted first to have a little tournament.. So he organised something for 16 people, partly people who had never played before.. great beer, great atmosphere.. he had a sharp big screen… (we did play under dosbox).. And people could play on my CD32 (really a relic from an ancient civilization for some people there)

They even made a special ‘ Worm-cup’ from a peanutbutter jar.. And on the second floor they have real bleachers to give a stadium feeling if we have a bigger event.

Lot of thanks to sebastiaan and hopefully on to bigger events.

WORLD CUP MADNESS!! Actually, like most people in Holland, we couldn’t give a rat’s arse about the world cup in Russia this year. The Dutch squad is missing! We do like retro football gaming however, and therefore we’ll organise a great alternative at the WPB. On Wednesday the 20th of June we’ll host our own world cup tournament in the foyer. Two joysticks, a big screen and arguably the best football game on the globe since 1991: SENSIBLE SOCCER!

Don’t know the game? Don’t worry, anyone can play it! Unlike modern realistic football games, you can play this game with a joystick with just one (!) fire button. When you have the ball you can pass or shoot with it; if you don’t have it, you can make some menacing tackles. That’s basically all you need to know. Fair warning: it’s easy to play, but damned hard to master!

Aside from the easy accessibility, it features fantastic pixel graphics, curvy banana balls, a proper intro song and a huge collection of official teams! It’s magical…. There are still communities organising official tournaments for experienced players around the world, both on Amiga and PC. For this tournament in WORM we’ll keep it simple though; we’ll host a cup, focused mainly on amateurs. 16 players can select their favourite team. First you’ll have to survive the group phase, after that the quarter finals, semi finals and yeah, go win that cup!

Want to compete? Send an e-mail to sebatosh with your top 3 of favourite footballing countries (no club teams!). The first one to apply gets first choice. And remember: it’s a retro game, so we’ll be playing with the teams from 96/97. Some teams were stronger in those days, you know…
