Sorry if this is answered elsewhere but can you use the old team/player db with the SWOS 2020 launcher?

Click on the cloud icon (DLC). In the DLC window, there is a tab for TEAM DB. Select your preferred year, download it, and check the "Enable" mark.
Then close DLC and run the game from launcher.

Thanks for this.
One more question - once i''ve done that how do i launch the ODB? When i go back to the launcher it just has run SWOS 2020, which just brings up 2020 DB.

ODB? Do you mean Original Database?
Go back to DLC, download/select 96/97 database, and tick ENABLE!
